Designed in 1921 by the engineer Bernard-Albin Gras, the designs pioneered a new system of lighting. It was Le Corbusier who championed the lamps as modern classics. He used the 'Lampe Gras' in his architectural works and in his own office. Following suit, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Eileen Gray, Michel Roux-Spitz, Sonia Delaunay, Georges Braque and many other avant garde figures adopted the lamps.
